Margie Orford, the South African crime fiction author and international bestseller, was the keynote speaker at the 2011 SheKilda Crime Writers’ Convention in Melbourne recently. She spoke of her time spent with the South African police as she researched her stories and the horrifically high crime rate which makes Australia’s releatively low crime rate look like a walk in the park. I admire Margie enormously. She was wrongfully imprisoned for treason when a young woman and had to study her degree in prison. But she is very loyal to her country and after spending time in New York she chose to return to South Africa to bring up her three daughters. A brave move and a move made by a woman who really cares. Her stories are equally brave and I recommend you try reading one. I wish her the very best of luck in all her endeavours.
